Administration Reveals Government Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Third Week

The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official procedure for letting employees go.

While the official did not specify which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has used the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to communities nationwide,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.

At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, labor groups sought a court injunction to prevent the administration from implementing any layoffs during the funding gap. Additionally, a court official ordered the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been recalled to carry out staff reductions.

A report argued that a government shutdown limits the authority of the government to carry out firings, citing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been started prior to the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs occurred on the same day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck for the final days of September but excluding the beginning of October, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our leaders in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our government running,” Stier stated. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
