A bettor earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was made public, sparking debate about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the US operation.
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that Maduro had been seized.
A particular user, which registered on the site recently and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
Yet these probabilities had jumped to over 10% by shortly before midnight and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in positions just before the public announcement was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on non-public details," commented Dennis Kelleher.
Several of other individuals also made large payouts from similar wagers.
